A Guide: Preparing For College

Avoiding The Freshman 15

The "Freshman 15" is a slang term used by college students to describe the weight gain many people experience in their freshman year of college. Because dorm food is often high in fat and calories, and many people do not have the free time they once had for exercise, weight gain is a common problem in college . Below are several hints for avoiding the dreaded “Freshman 15".

Tips:

  • Be a picky eater when it comes to dorm food. Find out if your dorm offers special vegetarian meals, which are usually more nutritious than the regular fare.

  • When possible, eat from the salad bar and use light dressings. Ask for a baked potatoes instead of fries. Fried foods are a MAJOR cause of weight gain.

  • Rent or buy a small refrigerator for your room. This will allow you to keep a better selection of food on hand to eat. Remember to keep healthy snacks in there! Fruits and fat free products are great, and don’t forget the water!

  • Don’t go grocery shopping when your hungry! You’ll end up buying all sorts of things you don’t need.

  • Eat smaller meals more often rather than infrequent, large meals.

  • Remember that you don’t have to eat just because someone else is. Pay more attention to your stomach. Don’t just eat to be social.

  • Alcoholic beverages should always be consumed in moderation. Besides the safety factor, a normal serving of beer contains 150 calories! They add up fast.

  • Exercise as regularly as possible. Many schools have a gym or physical fitness area that is free to students. Some have pools that students can use. Take advantage! To help you stick with the program, try to get your friends to go with you.

  • Drink at least eight glasses of water daily. Not only is it healthy, but it will make you feel full. Carry a bottle of water with you to classes. It’ll help you cut down on the snacks from vending machines.

  • Don’t fall victim to overeating due to stress. Take part in social activities, or go exercise instead!
